Tyrell’s Wines
By David Keck
In 1858 Edward Tyrrell took up farming 320 acres of top land in the Hunter Valley in Australia. A truly unique region for growing wine, the Hunter Valley is quite warm and humid and produces some of the most individual expressions of their classic varieties that can be found in the world. Hunter Valley Semillon is harvested very early in the year (January in the Southern Hemisphere) when it is green, high acid, and very lean. The resulting wine has bracing acidity, beautiful high toned citrus fruit, and can age for decades.
The Tyrrell’s family produces some of the most iconic examples of this Semillon as well as some amazing Shiraz and Chardonnay. Their ‘Vat 1’ Semillon was first produced in 1963 and continues to be one of the most ageworthy wines in the world, maintaining the bright acidity and just developing more waxy, candied character with decades of aging.
Continuing to evolve over the past 160 years (they celebrated that milestone in 2018), the winemaking family at Tyrrell’s turns out some of the best value out there with clear evidence that wine production in Australia has actually never been better.
We’ve got the three main wines from Tyrrell’s, but would be happy to bring in some of the top iconic bottlings if you need something for a collector or your own cellar!
