Welcome to the Flocc, CH. VIEUX GEORGET!
By David Keck
Bordeaux is a challenging area to understand for anyone, from the storied history, to the crazy pricing fluctuations, to the wildly different growing areas, grape varieties, and styles. Yet one thing is certainly true: the name of Bordeaux has always carried a certain mystique and guarantee (whether warranted or not) of quality. One thing that is also, sadly true, is that the region has never been associated with sustainability or organic production.
With all that said, we are excited to introduce the wines from Château Vieux-Georget, a producer of Bordeaux Supérieur that has been organic since 1984. Jean da Fré, son of Italian immigrants who had moved to St. Laurent de Bois (about 40km South Est of the town of Bordeaux), took over the vines of the family farm in the early ‘80s, immediately converting to organics and receiving Ecocert Certification in 1984.
The vineyards cover just 24 hectares, 20 of which are red grape varieties, leaning heavily on Merlot. The wine is fresh, rich, without being overpowering, spicy, and just delicious, with 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet Franc. The price is extremely reasonable, and the wine consistently overperforms. Santé!
